Jon Saia, one of the skilled Columbus DUI attorneys at our law firm, just served as a presenter at the 8 th Annual Driving Into a DUI seminar. The event took place in Key West on February 20, 2014. At the seminar, Attorney Saia spoke on the topic of "Drug Recognition, Evaluation and Classification in Drugged Driving Cases."
Drugged driving cases are DUI (or OVI) cases in which a person is accused of operating a vehicle while under the influence of drugs. Because drug impairment cannot be measured in the same way as alcohol impairment, prosecutors usually rely on evaluations by drug recognition experts or drug recognition evaluators (also known as DREs). These are officers who have received special training for determining whether or not a driver is intoxicated by drugs. The role of drug recognition evaluations is significant because these tests are often used as key evidence in drug-related DUI/OVI cases, usually in combination with blood test or urine test results.
Attorney Saia, who has more than 23 years of legal experience, is well-qualified to teach others about OVI-related issues. He is an OVI defense lawyer who has achieved the following:
- Certification as an instructor of standardized field sobriety test administration (given by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration)
- Certification in operation, diagnostic verification and calibration of the BAC Datamaster Breath Alcohol Testing Instruments (given by National Patent Analytical Systems, Inc.)
- The honor of being featured for his OVI defense work on the front cover of Super Lawyers® Magazine's 2014 Ohio & Kentucky issue
