The validity and accuracy of blood test results are often disputed during OVI and DUI trials. In order to provide our clients with the best possible defense against drunk driving charges, Attorney Jon Saia recently completed a course in Forensic Chromatography. Understanding the complicated steps that are involved in properly testing blood alcohol levels will help Attorney Saia assess the legitimacy of the blood test evidence brought against our clients.

Attorney Saia completed the Hands-On Forensic Chromatography Course offered by ASC, which taught attendees about the proper way to complete blood alcohol testing and the potential flaws in the current procedures. Attorney Saia participated in a dozen different hands-on labs throughout the course, which gave him the opportunity to perform the testing steps himself. The course allowed Attorney Saia to gain immense knowledge of blood alcohol testing procedure that will greatly benefit our firm’s OVI and DUI clients.

“Blood alcohol testing is nowhere near the exact science that the government makes it out to be,” Attorney Saia pointed out. He explained that the blood is actually not the main component that is tested. “It is the headspace gases in the container to which the blood is transferred and it goes downhill from there for the government.” Many attorneys are unaware of this important distinction, and this lack of knowledge could potentially impact their ability to defend clients against intoxicated driving charges.

The value of the Forensic Chromatography Course cannot be overestimated. According to the course’s primary instructor, Dr. Lee Polite, MBA, PhD, “I guarantee you that by the end of this course, you will know more than 95% of the people who run gas chromatography on a daily basis.”
