How can I deal with depression after divorce?

On Behalf of | Jan 17, 2019 | Family Law |

If you’ve recently gone through a divorce in Ohio, you may be feeling depressed about your situation. Even if it’s only a temporary feeling, it’s important that you take the right steps to manage your emotions to ensure you’re able to get back to the things you enjoy most. Healthline explains what you can do about post-divorce depression.

Take care of your health

Diet and physical activity can have an impact on depression. While you may be tempted to indulge in unhealthy foods and alcoholic beverages when you’re feeling low, focus on eating a healthy diet to stay energized. Also, consider adding a fitness regimen into your life. Even brisk walking for 30 minutes a day can help you feel refreshed while also improving your mental outlook.

Get enough sleep

If depression affects your sleep cycle, look for ways to boost your nighttime routine. For instance, refrain from using a computer or smartphone a few hours before bed, as this can actually prevent you from relaxing. Reading a book instead can help you unwind while also allowing you to do something you enjoy.

Spend time with others

Now is also a great time to expand your social network. Many people become isolated during the course of their marriage, and this isolation can increase feelings of depression when you’re on your own. Spend time with family and try to reconnect with old friends you may no longer be in touch with. If you have a small social circle, consider volunteering or participating in community activity to meet new people.
