What Is Title IX?

Title IX is a federal civil rights law that protects people from discrimination based on sex. It sets standards on how academic institutions that receive federal funding must handle sexual discrimination and sexual violence on campus.

Because of this law, colleges and universities have Title IX departments that investigate and punish allegations of sexual misconduct that occur on campus. Oftentimes, when an allegation of sexual misconduct arises, a student may be disciplined by the school regardless of whether formal criminal charges are filed.

A Title IX investigation can be a long and arduous process for a student to navigate. If found in violation of a school policy, a student can be suspended or expelled, and his or her transcripts will bear the scarlet letter of a Title IX violation, making it difficult to apply to other institutions. Not only can a student’s reputation be destroyed, but future career prospects will hang in the balance.

Because of all that is on the line when it comes to a Title IX investigation, it is incredibly important to retain counsel who understands the process and can guide the student and family through it, while at all times protecting the rights and interests of the accused.
